It is the Gluteus maximus. It is the largest muscle in the body. It is superficial in the gluteal region and is large responsible for the formation of the prominence of the buttocks.

Origins:
- Ilium posterior to posterior gluteal line
- Dorsal surface of sacrum and cocyx
- Sacrotuberous ligament
Insertion:
- Iliotibial tract that inserts into lateral condyle of tibia (most fibers)
- Gluteal tuberosity of femur
Q3: Name its function/s.
Functions:
- Extends flexed thigh at the hip
- Abducts hip
- Assists in raising trunk from flexed position
Q4: State its innervation.
Innervation:
- Inferior gluteal nerve
- L5-S2
Q5: What is the effect of injury to the above named nerve?
Injury to inferior gluteal nerve
- Gluteus maximus lurch
- Trunk extends (leans back) on heel-strike on weakened side and compensates for weakness of hip extension
